Teacher Candidates Visit Birmingham for Annual Rebel Road Trip

by UM School of Education on January 23, 2015

EdgeRR2015The UM School of Education’s Fourth Annual Rebel Road Trip brought together 72 senior teacher candidates to visit Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday, January 22.

The group, which included seniors from UM’s Oxford, Booneville, DeSoto and Tupelo campuses, visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and 16th Street Baptist Church then stopped by Robinson Elementary School in Fairfield, Alabama. At Robinson, the UM teacher candidates lead small group lessons with students informing them about UM and gave each child a SOE backpack.

“The whole trip was a wonderful excursion for our seniors,” said Haley Kesterson, coordinator of the trip and AmeriCorps VISTA worker. “The trip to Robinson was by far the highlight of the event. Many of the children had never heard of Ole Miss and we were happy to let them know they have what it takes to go to college, too, one day.”

Following the Robinson visit, the teacher candidates visited the McWane Science Center where they spent the evening before departing on Friday, January 23, to visit the Birmingham Zoo before returning to UM.
