Routledge recently published Student Clashes on Campus: A Leadership Guide to Free Speech.  The book is co-authored by UM Higher Education associate professor George McClellan and Jeffrey C. Sun, professor of higher education and affiliate professor of law at the University of Louisville.

“The focus of the book is on the tension that some people perceive or experience between higher education’s values related to academic freedom and free speech and its espoused values relative to inclusion,” McClellan said. “It is intended to be a very practical analysis of recent legal decisions and actions, but also to present legal and other frameworks as well as practical advice for addressing the balance between those values.”

In addition to his recent publication, McClellan has also been asked to serve as an honorary co-chair for the 41st Annual National Conference on Law and Higher Education presented by Stetson Law in Clearwater Beach, Florida

The conference will run from Jan. 29 through Feb. 3, 2020. McClellan will present on esports, host a discussion with Scott Bearby (VP of Legal Affairs and General Council for the NCAA),  and moderate the Crystal Ball Predictions Panel.

“I was honored and surprised when they asked me to be honorary co-chair because I am not an attorney,” said McClellan.

McClellan has presented at the Stetson law conference for several years on a variety of topics including gambling, esports and intercollegiate athletics. Notably, he  will have another book coming out in June 2020 called Esports in Higher Education: Fostering Successful Student-Athletes and Successful Programs.

Peter F. Lake, who is the Charles A. Dana Chair, professor of law & director, Center for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy, Stetson University College of Law said “George McClellan reminds me of one of those Southern front porch lawyers. He’s not really a lawyer, but it’s a blend of common sense, life experience and some law.”

Last year, Neal Hutchens, chair and professor of higher education and Kerry B. Melear, professor of higher education along with McClellan presented at the 40th Annual Conference, and Peter Lake acknowledged how strong the UM’s higher education program is around law and policy.
