by UM School of Education on February 11, 2014

EDGESAMWILLIAMSOle Miss education alumnus Sam Williams (M.A., ’09, Ed.S. ’11) will rejoin the School of Education this summer as principal of the Mississippi Teacher Corps’ (MTC) summer training facility located at Holly Springs High School.

A graduate of both the MTC and Principal Corps, Williams currently serves as the associate principal of West Point High School in West Point.

“The Teacher Corps and the Principal Corps have done a lot for me,” he explained. “The Teacher Corps is a very demanding program and I’m looking forward to working with new recruits and providing them with the support they need to learn and improve their craft. It’s an honor to be able to give something back to Ole Miss and this program.”

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Williams served as a seventh-grade mathematics teacher at Chastain Middle School in Jackson during his time in the MTC. He also served as an algebra teacher at Tupelo High School for one year before joining the Principal Corps in 2010.

“Sam has been through the program and understands the challenges Teacher Corps teachers will face entering the classroom,” said Dr. Tom Brady, MTC director. “He also brings real administrative experience from his time as an associate principal. We believe he will be someone who can bring valuable perspective to our program.”

Founded in 1989, the MTC is one of the most selective alternate route teacher training programs in the nation. In just seven weeks, recent college graduates from top colleges and universities around the nation, receive hands-on teacher training and job placement at a critical-needs public school in North or Central Mississippi. After two years, graduates of the program receive a Master of Arts degree in curriculum and instruction from UM.
