by UM School of Education on March 8, 2019

UM Higher Education Chair Neal Hutchens, along with Jacob Rooksby, who is Dean at Gonzaga Law School, joined Bill Kaplin and Barbara Lee as a part of the author team for the most recent edition of The Law of Higher Education, 6th Edition.

Hutchens

“The Law of Higher Education serves as the leading legal treatise on legal issues in higher education in the United States,” Hutchens said.  “The book is published by Wiley, and the authors are at work on an updated student edition for the Law of Higher Education.”

UM Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Higher Education Professor Brandi Hephner LaBanc, recently had an article published in the Journal of College and Character titled, “Leveraging Student Affairs to Heal the Social and Political Divide Within Our Campus Communities”.

LaBanc

“In 2018, I was honored to be a keynote at the 27th annual Jon Dalton Institute on College Student Values at Florida State University,” LaBanc said.  “This article reflects my comments that day and is a reminder of the critical, yet highly challenging, role student affairs professionals play in the growth and development of students on our campuses.  It is important for student affairs professionals to connect their theoretical training to the behaviors we witness on campus. The intentionality of our responses can have deep and lasting impact on students and the broader campus community.

George

UM Higher Education Assistant Professor Phillis George recently had an article published in the Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship titled, “Adolescent Civic Involvement and the Great Recession of 2008: Testing the Certainty of Employment.”

“It was a great joy working with several of our graduate students across disciplines within the School of Education,” George said. “Deidra Jackson, Laura Martin, and Eric Suddeath worked together and designed a really solid study as part of a course project. They later approached me for assistance with strengthening the course paper for a formal research presentation and publication. We presented the revised paper at the 2017 convening of the American Educational Research Association in San Antonio, TX and received favorable reviews. As such, we decided to transition the paper to a research manuscript for peer review and publication in the Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship–a leading journal in community outreach and engagement in higher education.
